The martial arts are lifestyle activities that can be enjoyed from young ages through adulthood. However, the way we practice and learn changes over time, so our youth program is specifically designed to engage young learners. The skills and exercises your child will learn are based in traditional karate and take advantage of children’s need to move, tumble, run and have fun. As your child progresses you will see a continual refinement of his or her technique and the introduction of new skills at appropriate times. This year Orono Community Martial Arts will host four sections for students of all ages and ability levels. Price for all levels is $90.00 for the fall session:
Youth Martial Arts K-2 (Thurs - 3:30): This introductory program teaches core martial arts techniques, combined with basic tumbling, high energy games, and other age-appropriate activities based in traditional Shotokan karate. Classes run approximately 45 minutes.
Youth Martial Arts 3-5 (Thurs - 4:30): This program introduces the fundamental techniques of traditional karate in a high-interest program for elementary-age students of all experience levels; good behavior and positive attitude are stressed as students are challenged to do their best in a variety of age-appropriate martial arts activities. Classes run one hour.
Middle-Level Martial Arts (Tues - 5:30): This program in Shotokan karate is designed to interest and challenge Middle School-aged students of all experience levels. Physical skills, self-defense, and personal social/emotional control are emphasized in this more rigorous class. Fifth-grade students ranked blue belt or higher may participate. Beginning students are welcome; no experience necessary. Classes run one hour.
Teen/Adult Martial Arts (Tues - 6:30): This program engages teens and adults in a complete course in traditional Shotokan karate. No experience necessary, this class emphasizes fitness, practical self-defense, and traditional martial arts. Adults and novices are encouraged. This is not your kid's karate class. Classes run one hour (extra time is often available).
