Afterschool Program

The Orono Parks and Recreation Department Afterschool Program offers a fun and safe alternative to your child going home to an empty house or a babysitter. The Afterschool Program is open to all afternoon K-5th graders.

OPENING AT 8:30AM
HOWEVER, IF THE ORONO MUNICIPAL OFFICE CLOSES WE WILL CLOSE ALSO
AND THE PARENT WILL BE NOTIFIED TO PICK-UP THEIR CHILD EARLY

General Information

• The children will be met at the Asa Adams School by the Afterschool Staff where they can use the gymnasium and outdoor facilities for games and other activities.
• The Staff will then escort the children to the Keith Anderson Community House where the children can participate in craft activities, play games, or do homework.
• The first 2 weeks of Afterschool, Kindergarten children will be dropped off at the Community House at 1:00 p.m. by bus if you have made arrangements with us to do so.
• Throughout the year, we will be offering different special events, trips and theme days along with our regular activities.
• Special events may include indoor swimming, sledding and sliding, nature walks, bowling, skating, etc.
• Pre-Registration Required!
• Afterschool Hours: Regular School Days; 2:45-5:30 p.m., Mini-Day’s; 1:00-5:30 p.m., Inservice & Vacation; 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Pick-up Policy
Children enrolled in the Afterschool Program are required to be picked up by 5:30 p.m. each night. Any parent who arrives late will be charged a late fee of $15.00 for the first half-hour and $15.00 for every half-hour after. Any future late pickups will result in the child possibly being removed from the program.

If your child is to be picked up by someone other than a person indicated on the registration form, a note need to be sent or contact the Afterschool Director. For safety, I.D.’s will be checked if there is any question. If your child will not be at the Afterschool Program on a day registered for, please contact us at 866-2631 or the Rec. Office at 866-5065. If your child is registered and does not arrive, we will contact parents.

• PARENTS ARE REQUIRED TO PAY FOR EVERY DAY REGISTERED FOR, REGARDLESS OF ATTENDANCE.
• AFTERSCHOOL IS CLOSED ON: Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Week of Christmas, New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Patriots Day, Memorial Day

Salmon in Schools Project
In 2004 we were given, through an Eagle Scout project, an aquarium and were lucky enough to be accepted into the Salmon in Schools Program. The Fish and Game people give us Atlantic Salmon eggs every year that are raised by the children. In May they are taken by the children to be released in a stream that flows into the Penobscot River. Everyone learns a lot about endangered species and salmon in general. The children are given a tour of the hatchery in Orland where our eggs originate every year. Everyone always looks forward to the next year when we receive more salmon eggs and we start the cycle all over again
